Luminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories
Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...
متن کاملThe Total Luminous Efficiency of Luminous Bacteria
Methods are described for measuring the light emitted by an emulsion of luminous bacteria of given thickness, and calculating the light emitted by a single bacterium, measuring 1.1 x 2.2 micra, provided there is no absorption of light in the emulsion. At the same time, the oxygen consumed by a single bacterium was measured by recording the time for the bacteria to use up .9 of the oxygen dissol...
متن کاملDetermination of the luciferin contents in luminous and non-luminous beetles.
The contents of firefly luciferin in luminous and non-luminous beetles were determined by the methods of HPLC with fluorescence detection and the luminescence reaction of luciferin and firefly luciferase. Luminous cantharoids and elaterids contained various amounts of luciferin in the range of pmol to hundreds of nmol, but no luciferin was detected in the non-luminous cantharoids and elaterids.
متن کاملScalar Non-luminous Matter in Galaxies
As a candidate for dark matter in galaxies, we study an SU(3) triplet of complex scalar fields which are non-minimally coupled to gravity. In the spherically symmetric static spacetime where the flat rotational velocity curves of stars in galaxies can be explained, we find simple solutions of scalar fields with SU(3) global symmetry broken to U(1) × U(1), in an exponential scalar potential, whi...
متن کاملLuminous Groups
We investigate the galaxy populations in seven X-ray selected, intermediateredshift groups (0.2 < z < 0.6). Overall, the galaxy populations in these systems are similar to those in clusters at the same redshift; they have large fractions of early-type galaxies (fe ∼ 70%) and small fractions of galaxies with significant star formation (f[OII] ∼ 30%). We do not observe a strong evolution in the g...
